Episode 166: Dr. Kym Harris-Lee Helps Gives Us a M.O.R.E. Mindset

Today on the Beyond the Business Suit Podcast I'm excited to have executive coach and author, Dr Kym Harris-Lee. Dr. Kym is an Emotional Intelligence expert and a coach of leaders who I have had the pleasure of working with through the EMERGE Academy program at ITSMF. We had such a great conversation! If you are a leader or emerging leader and/or if you are a Black women in corporate America, there is a lot you will get out of this episode.

Dr. Kym's Bio

Dr. Kym helps leaders take bold action to authentically achieve more visibility, connectivity, influence, and success without compromise.  She is an expert at helping leaders deepen their understanding of  themselves and others and she awakens the courage of her clients to explore uncharted possibilities.

Dr. Kym is a board-certified executive coach, speaker and published author.  Described as a “velvet hammer,” she utilizes a strategic and intuitive approach to guide clients out of their comfort zones in a way that minimizes discomfort and amplifies desired results. Along with coaching individuals and corporate clients, Dr. Kym has also served as a personal coach for the Kennesaw State University Coles Executive MBA and MBA Programs.

Having enjoyed a career as an executive focused on talent and leadership development, Dr. Kym has learned a lot about what it takes to masterfully manage and negotiate a successful career. Her lessons come from helping senior leaders identify and develop their high potential talent; conversations with other leaders working to navigate organizational cultures; and from her own personal experiences and missteps as a leader and executive. What she has learned from all of this is that competence is more than performance. Dr. Kym has used her knowledge to develop the M.O.R.E.® Mindset coaching methodology, which capitalizes on the individual uniqueness of her clients, while fine tuning the way they show up and the experiences they create with every interaction.

Dr. Kym’s career in Human Resources and Talent Development represents leadership and executive roles in higher education (University of Miami and Emory University), and corporate organizations (The Home Depot and Cox Enterprises).  She holds a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Rutgers University, a master’s degree in Business Administration from Nova Southeastern University, and a Doctorate degree in Organizational Leadership from Argosy (pronounced R-GA-SEE) University.

Dr. Kym is originally from New Jersey and has enjoyed life in Atlanta for twenty-seven years. She and her husband, Bernard, split their time together between Atlanta and Montgomery, Alabama; and she is the proud Auntie of four brilliant and beautiful nieces – Kalila, Zakiya, Sydni, and Adeera.

Quotables

“Just because this is your standard doesn't mean that is the standard.”
“How do people experience you?”

“The more we know about others and the more they know about us, the more likely it is that we will find some common ground.”

“Don't value other people's experiences more than you value your own.”

The Final Five

1. When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up? I always saw myself on a stage, as a speaker and someone really good at what they did. I'm doing what I saw myself doing.
2. What was your first job? I was a camp counselor at the YMCA. I got fired because I had a crush on one of my coworkers and my mother called my boss to tell my boss to fire me.
3. What do you think makes someone a good leader? Fundamentally, being human and being accepting. From a leadership perspective it's ok to show your flaws and to speak to your vulnerabilities, but do it in a way that teaches others.
4. What are some of the things you do to keep your skills sharp? I always say, “don't trust a coach that doesn't have a coach.” I have a coach, I listen to a lot of YouTube videos and other people who are doing what I do with a different perspective and surround myself with boss women. I am always looking for ways to be better.
5. If I asked 10 people to describe you using 3 adjectives, what do you think they would say: Calm, bold and authentic.
