Beyond a First Lady: Michelle Obama

Beyond a First Lady: Michelle Obama

Today I want to send a very Happy Birthday message to former first lady, Michelle Obama!

A couple months ago during my morning meditation, a thought came to me: “what would Michelle Obama do?” So, throughout the day, I found myself having moments when I would think to myself: “If I were Michelle Obama, how would I be taking this shower?” “How would Michelle be standing right now?” “How would Michelle Obama handle this client call?” In each of those instances, I realized that I was slowing down, standing straighter and elevating my energy. The next day, I had another thought: “I wonder what Michelle Obama was doing when she was my age (43)?” I looked it up and discovered that she turned 43 in 2007. In 2007, she was starting to  campaign for her husband's presidential run and likely had absolutely no idea how her life was about to change. She was coming into her own and leaning into the person she had been “becoming” her entire life.

This discovery put so much into perspective for me. I realized that the #WWMOD that came up in my meditation was a reminder and recognition that I, like Michelle was at my age, have no idea what is ahead for my life. But I do have an awareness that I am reaching an inflection point in my becoming, my potential impact and my elevation.

Michelle Obama is much more than a former first lady. She is an embodiment of grace, excellence and beauty. She opened so many of our eyes to new possibilities for ourselves. And, she gave so many black and brown girls a new role model — one they could see themselves in and someone who was smart, confident and powerful.

So Happy Birthday, Michelle O. Thank you for being an inspiration. Keep shining. Keep soaring. Keep becoming.
