Episode 182: Having a Money Mindset with Mary Grate-Pyos

Finances is one area that I think we can always use some guidance in and I have the perfect person to guide the conversation. In this episode of the Beyond the Business Suit podcast, I’m happy to have Author, Financial Advisor and Certified Family Business Specialist, Mary Grate-Pyos discuss how to maintain a money mindset while we build wealth and manage our finances.

While Mary is skilled in being a financial partner, she specializes in putting strategies in place in order for others to reach their financial goals. During our talk, we dive deep into having an accountability mindset, tips for assigning our money, and how our childhood perspectives with money shape our adult mindset for our finances. She also shares her 5 D’s for how to spend money.

QUOTABLES:

“Is your finances built for crisis or a life of peace?”

“Every dollar you gain should have an assignment. What assignment have you given your money?”

“Don’t dream so small about where you are financially.”

“You can’t have a landlord and a Land Rover.”

“The things you say to yourself is what’s going to move you forward.”

THE FINAL FIVE:

  • What was your first job? “In sales at a beachwear store in Myrtle Beach, SC. In high school, I also drove school buses at the age of 16 and also worked another job at a restaurant .”
  •  What is one quote that has impacted you or that you live by? “‘Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm’ by Ralph Waldo Emerson. I also refer to a ton of Bible verses. My favorite is Ephesians 3:20.”
  • If you could have brunch with 3 people, dead or alive, who would you select? “First it would be Bozoma Saint John, [formally] the CMO of Endeavor. She is fierce! Second would be Bishop TD Jakes and his wife. So much wisdom! Third would be, Mark Cuban. He is smart and a risk-taker who has a great entrepreneurial spirit.”
  • What is one of your superpowers? “A combination of praying and fasting. I’m in my zone and I’m so optimistic when I’ve gone before God praying and fasting. I put the prayer out there and then I fast.”
  • We are all weird in certain ways. What is something that makes you weird? “I won’t go without wearing pearls. It doesn’t matter if I have on workout clothes or something just casual. It’s the first thing I put on and the last thing I take off every day. I’m known for that. Even if I don’t have makeup on, I have my pearls on.”
