Episode 243: Elayne Fluker | Getting Over ‘I Got It’ Syndrome

In many of the programs. and experiences I lead, especially for women of color, I ask them to do two things: remove your masks and and your capes. For many of the women I work with, they feel obligated to mask who they are (which is whole ‘nother conversation) and also often wear their Superwoman capes proudly. However, I can attest that Superwoman is a fictitious super hero who, if she was a real person, would have needed some rest and a team of people to help her be at her best.

And that's why this episode of the Beyond the Business Suit podcast is so important!

This episode features a discussion with author and speaker, Elayne Fluker, previously recorded as a Soul to Soul Session for the Beyond Community. Elayne takes us through her new book Get Over ‘I Got It' while highlighting ways in which women of color, in particular, may hold themselves back from being their best selves by not accepting support, help and guidance from others. Not only does she encourage us to live unapologetically, but she embraces the art of NOT being Superwoman all the time, even if we feel like we are.

ABOUT ELAYNE FLUKER

ELAYNE FLUKER is author of the new book, Get Over ‘I Got It' (HarperCollins Leadership, May, 2021). Her mission is to help unapologetically ambitious women get over what she calls, “I Got It” Syndrome, embrace support and know that having it all doesn't mean doing it all alone.

Whether entrepreneur, top executive or rising star, successful women often resist the idea of asking for support. Instead, they struggle alone, fearing they might appear weak or incompetent. As a result, they sacrifice not only their success, but their peace of mind.

Elayne Fluker believes this dangerous mindset is partially the reason so many seemingly successful women end up depressed, overwhelmed, isolated and unfulfilled.

In Get Over I Got It, Elayne helps women learn how to build their own networks, make meaningful connections, and get the support they damn well deserve!

As host of her popular podcast, Support is Sexy — which has 800,000+ downloads and reaches listeners in 130 countries, Elayne has personally interviewed more than 500 diverse women entrepreneurs about their journeys and struggles with support. A dynamic speaker, who has appeared at 200+ events around the world and been featured often in the media, Elayne delivers her signature talk on how to “Get Over ‘I Got It' Syndrome” and teaches her “5Rs of making an empowered ask.” The audience leaves knowing how to confidently ask for and accept support, collaborate rather than compete and enroll others in their vision!

QUOTABLES:

“I associated support with desperation.”

“There’s some unlearning that has to be done.”

“Are you giving space for other people, situations, opportunities to show up for you?”

“Ask yourself: what really matters to you?”

“There are a lot of questions I’m living right now.”
