Episode 277: From Surviving to Thriving in Leadership

We're helping you take ownership of your leadership in the next episode of the Beyond the Business Suit podcast. Cheryl Bridges, a phenomenal executive coach and advocate for Black women in leadership, shares her perspective of self-leadership, setting healthy boundaries and the difference between leading vs. managing. During this conversation, she encourages us to get clarity on our God-given paths in order to truly thrive in leadership instead of simply surviving. She also gives her insights on what participants in the next ITSMF Emerge Academy cohort can look forward to with her as the new Director of the program.

QUOTABLES:

“I try my best to be as authentic as I can.”

“One of the most beneficial attributes of a good coach is the experiences that prepare you for what you will do with your clients.”

“People want to follow you if you’re a good leader.”

“Serving comes from trust, holding people accountable, having difficult conversations and having the courage to stand up for things.”

“Leading is really from your heart.”

THE FINAL FIVE:

  1. When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up? I wanted to be a school teacher and then a principal.

2. What do you think makes someone a good leader? Authenticity makes someone a good leader. The ability to relate to people, approachable, trustworthy…that’s what people are looking for in their leaders.

3. If you could have brunch with 3 people, dead or alive, who would you pick? Michelle Obama. Martin Luther King, Jr. My late mother.

4. Who do you stan? My mother. She was everything. She taught me what I know, how to be, what not to be, how to do… and how to be myself.

5. What is the best advice you've ever received? To be myself. I see the difference when I’m not being myself to when I am..which is 100% of the time now.
