Episode 279: Taking Control Over Your Health with Dr. Kanika Sims

In this special episode of Beyond The Business Suit, we're experiencing a first…interviewing a medical doctor! Dr. Kanika Sims, a talented physician, author and founder of Invest Inclusion, joins the podcast for an insightful discussion. Not only does she share her helpful tips on how to best take care of our bodies, but she also sheds light on taboo topics such as the mortality rate of Black women and treating diseases. She even takes us through her personal life journey along with her inspirations for writing her new book, Diversity Is Not A Dirty Word.

ABOUT DR. KANIKA SIMS

The healthcare disparities for Black people in the USA are alarming. As a Physician and founder of Invest Inclusion, Dr. Sims disrupts and re-imagines our current systems of healthcare and wellness to ensure quality health outcomes for the Black community.

Dr. Sims is a native of South Georgia and obtained her medical degree from the Medical College of GA. She completed her Residency training in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics at the University of South Florida. She then completed Fellowship training in Preventive Medicine at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and obtained her Masters in Public Health from Johns Hopkins School of Public Health.

She is an Assistant professor of Medicine at Morehouse School of Medicine, public health expert, speaker, author of “Diversity is Not a Dirty Word”, wife, and mother (of 3 littles).  She has practiced medicine for over 18 years and advocates tirelessly against healthcare disparities.  She is excited to move beyond the exam room to advocate for healthier and more inclusive, equitable spaces in healthcare organizations, workplaces, and academia.
When not championing the rights of the underserved, she spends her free time exploring Atlanta's bike trails, searching for the best vegan/gluten-free donuts and meditating.

QUOTABLES:

“There were never any limits that were placed on me.”

“The healthcare system is not created for us.”

“We currently don't have a system that keeps people well.”

“You are what you eat.”

“If we don't speak up, what happens to our kids.”
