Episode 284: Finding Your Dharma with Suneel Gupta

What happens when you lose your dharma, otherwise known as your inner calling? If there's one person who knows what it takes to lose your dharma and find it again, it's Suneel Gupta, author of his new book, Everyday Dharma. With storytelling at his core, Suneel takes us through his journey and the lessons he's learned along the way. With a discussion led by host, Kailei Carr, together they explore the magic of missed and hidden goals, the importance of taking moments of rest and the groundbreaking mindset shift he's experienced around productivity and inner fulfillment. Suneel even gives his tips on how to analyze your inner alignment while finding your own version of success.

ABOUT SUNEEL GUPTA:

Once seen as the “face of failure” in the New York Times, Suneel Gupta understands that the road to success is not always smooth.

Suneel learned from his mistakes and went on to become a founding CEO of RISE, a breakthrough wellness company named App of the Year by Apple.

Now a bestselling author, renowned speaker, Harvard Medical School visiting scholar, and host of a global Documentary Series, Suneel studies leaders around the world to discover and share simple, actionable habits that lift our performance and deepen our state of well-being.

QUOTABLES:

“Dharma is your inner calling.”

“There's profound things that can happen when you miss something.”

“When the heart breaks, it also grows.”

“Whenever possible, for any 55 hours of work, take 5 minutes of rest.”

“There’s a difference between outer success and inner success.”

THE FINAL FIVE:

  1. What was your first job? I was a busboy! Salvatore Scallopini Italian Restaurant. I worked my way up from pasta boy, up to waiter and then host of the restaurant.
  2. What is one book that has impacted your life the most? The Alchemist. It’s one of those books that is a simple read and it is just transportive. You feel like you’re in a different world. To take a reader there is an art form.
  3. Who is someone you really admire? The person who is top of mind for me right now is Bob Marley. I spent a lot of time researching and reading about Bob Marley for the book; there was always a spirit and a vibe that always made me happy.
  4. What is your favorite movie? I love The Graduate. It’s such a classic. I’ve always identified with Dustin Hoffman’s character. He sort of just doesn’t know what he’s doing and I’ve always sort of felt that way.
  5. We are all weird in certain ways. What is your flavor of weird? I have really become anti-phone to a point where it drives my family nuts. But I’m so liberated by walking around with a little pad of paper. Like a post it, and just a pen. I’m constantly going into my pocket and writing notes. No one knows what my deal is. I find it so liberating to be phone-less.
